The Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium, picture taken 21-Feb-2004 from across the Cooper River

Today was day two volunteering at the aquarium. I had lots of fun. I worked with another volunteer today. She's been there for over 2 years. I got to do a little bit more than last weekend. I ran all the same tests as last week and a few extras--all on a different set of samples (which vary from day to day). I also helped with feeding in a few tanks that the lab is responsible for. I met several new people, whose names I'll likely forget before next week..luckily everyone has a name badge. :)

In other news, I bought a power plug adapter for my camera, which has a dual voltage AC to DC power adapter (AC IN is 100-240V 50/60 Hz). For those who know anything about different plugs..the adapter has the A,B,C,D adapters..but not the E adapter--which should be ok. I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but we a planning a holiday to Ireland while I am visiting. Apparently some of Ireland uses the E connector, but Scotland only uses B/C.

This blog has taken about two hours to write because I have been watching Moulin Rouge, which Kira gave me. It is a bizarre movie, but I love the way it is done.

I'm going to Scotland!!

I didn't want to post a new blog because I liked the picture from the last blog, but...

As the subject says, I'm going to Scotland..to visit Rachael..in a little over a month. I can't wait!. I got my tickets in the mail a couple weeks ago..now it's time to figure out what we'll be doing while I'm there. Currently we are planning a trip to Ireland..so it should be a fun-filled holiday with Rachael.

I just finished ordering 2 128X2 MB memory sticks (double sided 256MB total), so I will have a total of 768 MB of picture storage when I get to Scotland. I should easily be able to take 700 pictures :). Just don't expect to see too many on-line..as I can't afford the disk space. I still need to get a power converter so I can charge my camera while I'm there.

I started my volunteering at the South Carolina Aquarium last Sunday. I go Saturday for day two. I am working in the Water Quality Lab. It's very cool. I get to test water from all over the Aquarium. I got to stick my hand in a tank full of piranhas :). I can tell it will take a while to pick up on everything that I have to do..lots of chemistry..which I barely remember from high school. I did my best to avoid chemistry/biology at Clemson and now I am volunteering to do it!

Thanks to everyone for the gifts!!

Happy New Year!!

Ok, so it's a little late :) I've been busy..

The day after Christmas the family flew up to Jersey for a week..celebrated New Year's while counting sheep..then came home. It was a good time..saw lots of family I hadn't seen in years, including some I'd never seen. The first few days I got to spend some time with Rachael before she left for Glasgow. Oh, and Mount Pleasant needs a WaWa.

By the way, the Peach Bowl ROCKED!!

The day after getting back I spent 2 hours at the Post Office getting my passport, which I now have so I can leave the country..which I plan to do very soon..I just got the tickets in the mail.

I've been working all over lately, mostly on IOP, with a little on Sullivan's and Daniel Island. Daniel Island has grown a lot since I last visited it (in mid 1996 I believe). I have driven by a lot and have seen the development..but there is a lot you can't see from the highway. The last time I was there, there were a few houses and one big building (Healthsource back then).

I have also signed up to volunteer at the South Carolina Aquarium. I have not yet started..I will in mid-February. I really wanted to be a diver, but I do not have the necessary certification at this time. It's a simple one-night class and 5 dives, so it's not too bad to get to the point I need to be..just expensive. I haven't been diving since 1995 and all of my gear needs to be replaced. Most of it was used when I got it. I'm trying not to think about how much it will cost to replace it all. Back to the aquarium, I will be working in the Water Quality Lab..not sure exactly what I'll be doing yet though..No matter what it is though, I'm sure it will be awesome...I can't wait to start..Which reminds me..there is two IMAX movies I really want to see right now..Galapagos and Coral Reef Adventure (which just opened). I just need someone to go see them with..and I wish you didn't have to pay to park..It's expensive enough as it is.

I replaced my OLD dvd-rom and my somewhat old cdrw yesterday with one drive. My dvd-rom was about as old as they get and wouldn't read an entire disc..the cd burner has not been burning correctly. I could only get it to burn at 1x. The new drive can burn at 48X..it can burn a 700MB cd in less than 3 minutes. The old one would take 30-40 minutes..if it even worked. I almost got a dvd burner but decided I have other things that I'd be better off getting..like SCUBA gear (followed closely by advanced open water training), a kayak, or simply paying off my bills :)
