The Week in Review

Since the last post, I've been rather busy..for me at least. Last Tuesday the Aquarium released another sea turtle. I was actually able to make it to the release so I took a few pictures and placed them in the gallery (click on the 'Gallery' link to the left).

Thursday I actually had to work. Not much to say about that.

On Friday I laid out some plans for my new desk. It will be just under eight feet long and will have space for several monitors, two keyboard/mouse setup pull out trays, a spot for a laptop, and some storage space for everything else. It shouldn't be too expensive for the materials. It does however require that I replace my bed and buy a table saw. Which basically means it's another of my projects that is a long ways off.

Saturday I spent paddling with Jonathan in Murrells Inlet. For the PSA alumni, the landing is directly across the marsh from the 'Conch Out' beach house in Garden City. We paddled for about 4 hours around the marsh with a short trip out to the ocean side of the islands. The tide was real low when we came back in and the route we took didn't quite have enough water, even for a kayak. There was several times we actually had to get out of our boats and drag them through the mud. I was worn out by the time we made it back to the landing.

Sunday I did my aquarium duties and then helped (or is it made?) my mother clean out the laundry room to get rid of stuff that's been lost in there for ages. Needless to say, the task is still incomplete, but the laundry room looks better. The back room on the other hand gained a laundry room full of, dare I say it, crap.

Labor Day didn't really live up to it's name.

Tuesday I set up a secure wireless network in my mother's office downtown. It's interesting how different the router is than mine considering it's the same model. Aren't they supposed to change model numbers when they change a product? I like mine a lot better because you can tell a lot more by simply looking at the face. Mine has lots of pretty lights. Securing the router has gotten much easier for the average user. Security is on by default. This in good for the consumer, but bad for the wardriver.

I've also been spending some time working on some websites. One is irritating the living daylights out of me because I'm trying to make a company website that is xhtml compliant and have it look good in multiple browsers. IE is the devil. I thought I had it working well until I looked at it on my laptop. I had several settings that were based off of the DPI setting on the computer. The laptop DPI is set at 120 (the norm is 96 I believe) to make the fonts bigger. I've got everything mostly fixed now, but I still have errors in IE that I cannot figure out for the life of me. It works fine on my desktop and 120 DPI, but is messed up on the laptop at 120 DPI. Suggestions are welcome. I'll even send you a link to the test site (which is served locally on my computer).

I also fixed a ton of stuff on my personal website. By looking at it I doubt you'll notice much of a difference however. I decided that I would actually try to validate my site with the W3C. In the five or so pages I've fixed so far, I had over 1000 errors between them. Most are from the lack of parenthesis, case-sensitive tags, and not closing tags that don't really need to be closed. Others were just some bad code that got lost and left in editing. Hopefully I didn't mess anything up in the process.

This entry seems to be far too long. Sorry for that.

Just out of curiosity, after you drag your boat through the mud, don't you get the inside of the boat full of mud when you get back in it? And is it conceivable that after a couple outs and ins that it could become too heavy to float? Merely trying to visualize...

Enough with "trashing" your mom... I like to think of my inability to part with things as a... gift...

Besides - it's the packrat gene and it is located on the X chromosome. Possibly the same one supplied to one's son. Oh no, could it be recessive???

The inside of the boat did get dirty, but I didn't track much mud into it. I tried to get the worst of it off before climbing back in. I have a bilge pump in case I get too much water in the boat. It would be hard to sink a kayak. There is three separate compartments. The cockpit, and two sealed storage areas, which stay fairly dry and full of air which will keep you buoyant.
