Four answers so far, all correct..
Sports quotes are tough, so I'll give some hints..
He's a well known, retired basketball player. He played in the All-Star game 12 times, MVP of two. He's a 5-time NBA champion. He was on the 1992 Olympic basketball team. As the quote points out, he retired from basketball more than once.

5. Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is a good guess, but this player is four years older and hails from Michigan.

Jordan was my first guess too, but I googled to be sure before posting. Since I looked it up, I won't spoil the fun for others.
Here's a hint: I'm not a NBA fan at all, and I instantly recognized his name.

5. Magic?
Posted by: Jeremy at October 10, 2006 11:05 PM
Earvin 'Magic' Johnson would be the man. I'll admit, the stats I gave were carefully picked to make Jordan a smart guess. Jordan was 3 time MVP out of the 14 All-Star Games he played. He was a 6 time NBA Champ, on the 1992 Olympic team (as well as the 1984 team), and he retired from basketball three times vs Magic's two.
