28 Days Later
Wow. One full month of blogging. I decided at the end of January that I should write an entry every day for the month of February. Once I post this entry, I will have successfully completed this goal. From now on, I'll do my best to post as much as possible.
I saw a commercial a couple of days ago about a DVD for detecting counterfeit minis. Here's the web site [counterfeitmini.com].
I'd write more, but I have to figure out if I have PowerPoint and install it so Kira can do a project. Which is due tomorrow. It's now 9:30 at night and I want to go to bed.

The Holy Roman Empire
Where's Mike Myers when you need a topic? It's getting late again and this brain just simply doesn't run at full strength this late in the day.
Tomorrow I head back to Seabrook. I can't wait. I just realized I forgot to switch out my vehicles (currently the Jeep is only the weekend warrior), so I'll have to move 2-3 cars out of the way in the morning. That should be fun. In the rain. When it's cold. And dark. And I'm late. This is the time where you should feel bad for me. lol.
On a serious note, I'm going to bed

I'm Running Late
It's getting late and I haven't yet written my blog for the day. I'd hate to kill my month long streak.
Today was good. I didn't go to work. Which means I slept well past 5:15 am. That's about an hour before the sun comes up for those of you that don't think the time exists. I'm not the biggest fan of waking up and seeing the moon.
My main accomplishments for today were fixing two fans in the house and filling another drum-sized trash bag with stuff from my not all that big closet.
The fans were a pretty easy fix after a quick trip to the home improvement store. Both my fan and my sisters had the same piece break within a month of each other. Since I don't ever go in her room and she hasn't been too bothered by it, I didn't get around to fixing until mine broke. I fixed both without electrocuting myself. I didn't do that until I starting looking into to putting an outlet in my closet.
I took out an outlet in my room to see if I could figure out where the wires went. I reminded myself not to touch the side of the outlet because I knew it would be hot. While fighting to shove all the wires back in, however, I got a nice little jolt of 110 volts after touching the screws on the side. That always makes my elbow tingle for a several hours (yes, it's nowhere near the first time that's happened). I imagine it's probably not to good for you.
I'm doing my best to get most everything out of the closet so when I find some wood..more likely when I buy some wood, I'll be ready to install it. I think I got about as far today as I'll be able to. Now I just need $60-70 in wood, a miter saw, a table saw, and a sander. Maybe a compressor and a brad nailer.
Gotta go to bed so I can play with the fishy's in the morning...

L' Auberge espagnole
I just got back from a screening of the French Film, L' Auberge espagnole. It was part of the College of Charleston's French Film Festival I thought it was a very interesting movie. The basic plot is that a French student moves to Barcelona to learn more about Spanish/Economics. He ends up finding an apartment with several other international/European students. I really like how they changed back and forth between speaking French, Spanish (actually I believe a lot of Catalonian), English, and others. Yes, most of the movie was subtitled. The biggest problem I had with it was the lack of character development. Which, like Lost, there is so many people that I suppose you can't develop them all. Well, it's past my bedtime..so..go rent the movie or something.

Capturing Marine Life
I've wanted one for a while. When I bought my camera, however, they didn't make one. While kayaking last week I took my camera, putting it in a plastic bag the first time. The second I put it in a plastic bag inside of a dry-bag that Jonathan let me borrow. It made me wonder if Sony yet made a water resistant case for my camera. So this evening I went to their website and found that they indeed do make one. The only problem is that it costs more than half of what I paid for the camera. It'd be a great investment if I got back into diving and could see more than two feet under water.

My Ride In
Only an 50 minutes to Lost. Followed by Alias. Which means I only have that much time to write an entry about something..otherwise it'll be 10 o'clock before I finish the post.
Today was yet another day where I didn't do much exciting. I left late for work..again. Normally I am able to make up the time and tend to get to work just in the nick of time (not that being there on time seems to matter all that much.) Today was a bit different. The fog this morning was very dense. Visibility ranged from probably 30-50 feet until I was through downtown. Going up the old span of the Cooper River Bridge was cool. All I could see of the other two bridges were a few faint street lamps. Needless to say, this didn't help my being late issue much.
I know this is sad, but I have figured out where and when I need to be on my journey in order to make it on time. Hey, I got nothing better to think about for an hour a day, while singing along with Jem, Gwen, and Adam. Man, I need to appropriate some new CD's for the car (which reminds me I have to use Jonathan's unwitting suggestion of the Buckwheat Boys for my Annoying as Crap CD). So anyways, when I made it to the half way point, I was still running about 15 minutes behind where I needed to be. This being my last chance for gas which I need, I decide to get it tomorrow, when I will undoubtedly be late again. Then, on the winding two lane roads, I get stuck behind the person who thinks they can't go over the speed limit.
Now, the problem with winding two lane roads on a foggy day after a couple days of rain is that it's slightly difficult and possibly a wee bit dangerous to pass. Especially when you know that as soon as you risk life, limb and your car to pass them, they are going to turn off at the next road. Of course if you don't pass them, they'll just keep on driving. It's a conspiracy.
So I finally made it to work, only about 5 minutes late (I said it was difficult and dangerous..not that I didn't do it.) I still beat the boss by about 25 minutes, so I don't feel too bad.
Time to prepare for my night of 'live' television.

Don't Get Too Excited
Here I sit yet again trying to write an entry with nothing to say. Today was a generic Tuesday. Nothing exciting to report. Sadly, I think the most exciting thing I did this afternoon was look at Tool Crib's website on Amazon. I looked at all the tools that I want but can't quite afford to buy just yet. With upcoming projects at home, I'm going to try and start picking up some stuff. They are currently running full shipping on all the tools, which is awesome for the things I can't easily find in town.

Oops
Today's work day was cut a wee bit short today due to a single, 16 foot long piece of 1X4 glorified cardboard..err I mean MDF. I went to adjust the saw this afternoon and the MDF that I was planning to cut slid off of the cut station and took out the regulator on the compressor. The double tank compressor quickly let out all of the air and the day was done. Oops. It's pretty sad when the breakdown of one little tool can stop five people from working. This isn't the first time this has happened..the last time, however, the solution was much closer. Being in Seabrook it would take at least a 30 minute drive to buy the part we needed. Up until the end of last week we actually had a spare compressor with us.

Time For New Time
I bought a new watch today. I've been trying to figure out all day how long I've been wearing Freestyle watches. My guess is roughly 15 years. I'm on number 4 today. While kayaking yesterday my 8 or 9 year old watch decided that it didn't want to be water resistant anymore. Which is ok. It decided long ago that it didn't want to beep. It smelled. It had a chunk taken out when it saved my arm from getting cut off by a saw. I'm extremely surprised that the indiglo feature still worked. I browsed online and found the one I wanted, and then headed to Half-Moon to realize that I didn't like it at all. So I ended up with the Predator (blue), although it looks a bit purple in the right light), which is the one I didn't like so much online. I'm glad I didn't buy it online. It's going to take some getting used to though. It is a bit more of a pain to take on and off. Unfortunately they only make orange watches in ladies sizes.
I'm back to Seabrook tomorrow..grr..should be a lovely, rainy day. I can't wait. Y'all have fun now, ya hear?

Just Real Quick..
Today was a good day..but it's long past my bedtime, so this will be short. Jonathan and I went kayaking this afternoon, which was good fun. I tore up he bottom of my kayak on oysters. I need to make it look like I use the thing :). I should have taken pictures of both the boats on my car.
We went and saw The Aviator this evening thanks to Kira. It was a good movie..but quite long. I was tired before it started..so I had to fight to stay awake during (which is in no way a reflection of the film.)
I'm off to the aquarium in the morning..and I need some sleep..

Another Day, Another [Not So Good] Entry
This should be a quick one because Jonathan is on his way down from Columbia (sorry you couldn't make it Susan.) He said he's driving down with his kayak on top of his Jeep with the top down. It's currently 42 degrees outside. He's gotta be freezing.
I've recently started watching VR.5 . This show ran for only a couple months in 1995. It's one of those ridiculous tech shows. I liked it then for some reason, but I can totally understand why it was canceled. I really don't remember much beyond the first episode..other than the fact that it was really bazarre.
Oh, and the bad news for the day is that I was told I'd be working in Seabrook until we finish the job.

I Promise A Better Entry On A Later Date
I don't have much to say today. I waited too long to start writing an entry and now I'm tired. My brain has shut down.
I updated a few small things on my website this evening (the big list and HRC.) Thanks to those who bought things from the list.
It would be in your best interest to not read the following paragraph. It may not be hazardous to your health. Well, actually, I guess it could be.
This is sad. I really can't think of anything to say. Maybe I'll just ramble on till I can't ramble any more. It'd be interesting to see how long you keep reading this. I could probably sit here and type about absolutely nothing for at least two minutes. You'd get so bored about half way through reading it you may never come back to read another entry. That probably wouldn't be good though. I need as many readers as I can get. Although I'm not sure why. It's not like I really say anything earth shattering. Man. I don't even think I've made it through two minutes of rambling yet. This may not be long enough for you to get bored. Why are you reading this? Do you think that I may say something interesting? If you've gotten this far, can you please write comment on why you've wasted so much time? I'd be interested to know. Honest. I would. I think I'm falling asleep as I type. For those of you that did not heed the warning, I'm going to stop writing. I'm doing it for you. And don't you forget it. Before I do though, I am going to copy and paste this whole paragraph just to make it look really long. There is nothing below this sentence that you have not already read. Or is there? This is sad. I really can't think of anything to say. Maybe I'll just ramble on till I can't ramble any more. It'd be interesting to see how long you keep reading this. I could probably sit here and type about absolutely nothing for at least two minutes. You'd get so bored about half way through reading it you may never come back to read another entry. I don't even think I've made it through two minutes of rambling yet. This may not be long enough for you to get bored. Why are you reading this? I lied. These two sentences were not printed above and it's really sad that you noticed. Do you think that I may say something interesting? If you've gotten this far, can you please write comment on why you've wasted so much time? I'd be interested to know. Honest. I would. I think I'm falling asleep as I type. What a Day!
Today went a lot smoother than I had anticipated. I woke up to find lots of updated and newly formed blogs..which was awesome. I then headed to the dentist for my 8 o'clock appointment where they were nice enough to not tell me I had cavities. It was also $36 less than I thought it would be. From there I went to the Department of Motor Vehicles. They wouldn't let me go in yielding my 1.5 inch long knife that I carry on my keys. I guess the DMV has to take all precautions dealing with the type of people that go there.
The lady next to me was having some serious issues. I won't go into all of it..and I'll be honest that I haven't quite figured it all out. I think she was trying to renew the registration for a car. The car, which was impounded, was owned by her father. Apparently her father can't drive. Her boyfriend is the one who can get it out of the impound. But he's in jail. So..are you lost yet? I am. I feel sorry for the DMV employees.
So anyways, I renewed my license and changed out my new plate for my Jeep for the endangered species tag. I walked out of the DMV about 9:05. I don't have to go back for 10 years. This was the least painful trip to the DMV I have ever had. There was practically no wait time. I sat down for about 5 minutes, which was barely enough time to fill out the paperwork. So the dentist and the DMV in 65 minutes.
I then went and checked out 3 different locations for putting in a Kayak. I decided on the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. I went Kayaking here when I was in High School. When I was getting all my gear ready, there was a guy coming in. He backed his trailer into the water to load his boat. The only problem was that his boat was floating away. It was probably 15 feet from the landing. He said a few choice words, followed by, "well that never happened before." He mumbled some other redneck things. I just kind of nodded and acted like I knew what he was talking about.
It was a nice paddle. The water was very calm. The wind, on the other hand, was definitely blowing. After paddling into the wind for about an hour and a half, I looked back to see how far I hadn't gone. I so need a motor. The trip back to the landing was nice. I mostly just let the wind blow me all the way back.
Ok..I'm ending this now because I'm watching more tv than writing..

I Was Attacked!
At work today I was bit by a big ferocious snake. Well. Not really. But it kind of looks like it. I, for the first time since I became a carpenter, shot my finger with an air gun. Right before lunch, no less. I shot myself with a staple so there's actually two holes. I should consider myself lucky though. It could have been a 2.5 inch nail, or worse, a 3 inch framing nail. Now those would hurt. This wasn't too bad. At most it went a quarter of an inch in. It felt like it hit the bone, but I seem to be ok. It's just sore now.
The funny thing is that I am always telling people to move their hands further away from where they are nailing. Nails have a tendency to hit the grain of the wood wrong (or another nail) and pop out the side (I've even seen them do a u-turn and come back out right next to where you shot it.) I was just moving along, nailing up some paneling. My hand was too close and the staple went through the paneling and out the side of the stud behind it. Right into my middle finger.
I'm excited about tomorrow. I get to go to the dentist, followed by the DMV. Lucky me. The good thing is that I will not be going to Seabrook. No work for me tomorrow. I'm going to try to go kayaking, depending on the weather. I'm sure I'll keep you updated. I can't say too much now..or else I won't have anything to say tomorrow.

Why Must We Prove the Brain Right With The Braun?
This happened about a month ago, but I was reminded today when an attic access ladder was delivered. Basically we were asked to install an attic access in the last house we worked on. We knew right of the bat that the hole framed out for the access was too close to an adjacent wall. The wall would likely interfere with the opening of the attic access.
Rather than hoist the 100 pound access up into the hole, my co-worker and I decided to do the math. We calculated that it would hit the wall roughly about four inches from the ceiling, six inches from the top of the cased opening below (basically an opening the size of two doors). We suggested turning it around because it would open all the way in that direction. The contractor, however, was dead set on it opening into the cased opening, so our bosses said that we should still install it as planned because it might fit.
So we go back and gaze at the opening. There is nothing worse than having to install one of these, except for of course, taking it back down. Knowing full well that we would struggle for 20 minutes trying to get this thing in and secure, then have to bravely (yes, bravely) pull the thing back down, we went to the directions that came with the ladder. The directions proved that the opening was indeed too close to the wall. So we go back to our bosses who excogitate our findings. They decide that we might be right but that we should still go ahead and put it in, just to make sure. This way we can show the contractor that it won't work.
So we put the blessed thing in and lo and behold, it hits the wall about four inches from the ceiling and six inches from the opening below. Go figure. So they tell us to leave it and show the contractor.
Well the next day, the contractor comes in. Of course neither of the bosses are at the house. So I talk to him. He's not too happy that it doesn't open all the way. Noticing that is was indeed very close to the wall, he said, "Why did we even put it in?". I took that as a rhetorical question. I had no clue why we put it in. So now we look stupid for putting in this attic access that obviously wouldn't open. I somewhat made up for this by showing him exactly where it would hit [the ground] if we turned it around. This is what we ended up doing. Grrrr. Arghhh...

Too Many Collections
So when did the price of collectible baseball cards fall? I have a ton of cards from my youth that I thought would be worth at least what I paid for them 15 years ago. Complete sealed sets sell for only a couple dollars on eBay. I'd love to get rid of some of my cards to free up some space, but it isn't worth selling them now.
I tend to go overboard in my collecting of things, causing lots of clutter. Baseball cards (a sport, like all sports, which I never really cared to watch), Star Wars figures, and Lego. Those are my main culprits of taking up too much space at the moment. Come to think of it, computer parts, wires, vehicles, movie posters (in and out of frames), ticket stubs, movies (videos and DVDs), Cd's, magazines, shot glasses, pint glasses, bottles, hats (which I hardly ever wear), and probably a dozen other collections probably don't help much on the space issue. (not that all of these things are bad things too collect)
Why do I have to be so much of a pack-rat? I'll admit that I am getting a lot better than I used to be. I've pretty much resorted to not letting myself buy anything. I don't even go to the store. When I do, I try my darnedest to stay out of the toy section. I'm doing my best to throw away a lot of stuff as well. I'm not sure why I still need my notes from Algebra II in high school. I've filled up a drum-sized trash bag this weekend with stuff..err crap from my closet. I've recycled roughly a ton of magazines, half of which I probably never read, in the last month. Why did I ever think I needed this stuff? Like I was going to go back and read it. Relearn what the quadratic equation is. Not that I ever really had a grasp of that.
Ok..I am going to go back to watching Footloose on AMC.

We Have The Power!
Ok, so the battery backup went in today. We went with the APC 500VA (Back-UPS ES series). It looks as if it will last about 8 minutes with the battery at full capacity. The software that comes with it is cool. I haven't spent too much time digging through it, but you can change lots of settings and see the status of the battery. One of the best features is that it automatically shuts down the computer if the power goes out for an extended amount of time.
In other news, I got the tags for my Jeep today. So I guess I'm ready to go to the DMV and hopefully change it out. One of the sales associates thought he'd be helpful and put on the new plate for me. He grabbed a screwdriver and came out to help change it, when he realized it was a hex bolt. This suited me fine since I didn't want to have to take it back off.
Ok.it's almost Sunday..and I have to get up early..so 'night!

More Randomness
I've been sitting here staring at this blank entry for a while trying to come up with something to write. There may be some exciting things to mention in a few weeks, but as for now..I don't have much to say.
Let's see. Tomorrow I have to go to the Jeep dealer to pick up my tags. Then I'll take the license plate to the DMV on Wednesday and try to trade it out for the one I really want. Using a direct link from the DMV's website, the one I want looks like:

I think that some home remodeling projects may start soon. I just wish I had some more tools (like miter/table saws). I can borrow anything I need, it's just a pain in the butt sometimes to move the tools around. I think that we may put some sort of panels in the dining room. Pictures will definitely show up when it all happens. Knowing us though, it could take a while. :)

Skyscrapers Are Cool
I'm such a dork. I sat down to write an entry and made the mistake of turning on the tv. I have become enthralled with this program on the History channel about building skyscrapers. I could probably watch this same show every day for a week and still find it fascinating. Reminds me of a program (several hours long) I watched (more than once) in college about building some bridge..I don't even remember which one.
Well, tomorrow is Friday..which means I only have to go to Seabrook one more day this week. I still haven't heard anything about next week. I guess the trip isn't so bad. Round trip is about 65 miles..which takes an hour or so each way (and it all goes on my Mazda.) This morning my mother told me to tell my bosses that I wasn't allowed to work out in the Kiawah/Seabrook area anymore. This is because I get up earlier than normal and take a shower first. Apparently I take long showers and I use all the hot water. Unfortunately they just laughed it off..

You Gotta Hate Splinters
Well, apparently the power company thinks I need practice setting up my router..because they decided to screw it up again after I left for work this morning. Definitely getting a UPS system..definitely.
I'll have to admit that I have picked a horrible time to start writing a post. Eight o'clock on a Wednesday night. This is the only night I watch 'live' tv. Lost..now followed by Alias. Two hours of new JJ Abrams shows in a row.
Why do splinters have to hurt so much? I got one rather large splinter in my hand this morning, from treated wood no less. It took me about 20 minutes to pull it out. Not fun. It continued to hurt all day. I noticed on my long drive home that there looked to be another. So I spent another 20 minutes digging. Into my hand. It feels better now..but it's still hurts.
I've been writing this for almost an hour and a half..so I think I'm gonna give up..

Random Thoughts
I'm extremely tired right now, so this post may make no sense. In case you haven't noticed, however, I am on a record smash...obliterating run of blogging days in a row. This means I have to write something. The only problem is that I don't have a good topic to discuss.
The power outage from Sunday night reset our wireless router to the factory defaults. It lost all of the settings I had..including the password. I had to actually look up the default pass code on the internet, which turned out to be a no brainer. We will likely soon have a Uninterrupted Power Supply feeding the router, modem, and my computer. They have gotten much cheaper and a little more advanced since I last looked at them (which was years ago). They only have enough battery power for 1-6 minutes though. We need better batteries in the world.
I was going to talk more about something..but I'm too tired. Till tomorrow..

I Woke Up This Morning...
at 3:30am because the power repeatedly went out for a split second. When it came back on, my alarm clock was reset and a lovely digital female voice coming from my land line phone told me to "Press review to receive setup instructions." So I reset my clock..then my reset the alarm. Then I repeated these steps when it happened again and again and again. This happened no less than 5 times until the power just went out completely. I was slightly irritated to say the least. I could not fall asleep until I knew that I had an alarm set to wake me up by 5:15 (have I mentioned how much I loathe working in Seabrook). In the middle of the power outage I realized that I could set the alarm clock on my cell phone. Thank goodness for technology. So I set the alarm..fell back into bed..just about to go back to my REMing..and the power came back on..with the land line phone trying to tell me what to do. grrr..

It's Back!
It's that time of the year. The time of year where we turn Girl Scouts into cookies and then crush them into little chunks and put them in ice cream. Now at a grocery store near you is Edy's Girl Scout cookie ice cream. I highly recommend the thin mint and tagalong. Just make sure you don't get the reduced fat flavors..
/end advertisement
Today hasn't been too bad of a day. I washed my cars because it was a nice, fairly warm day. It rained most of last week and I have a habit of driving through puddles so the jeep was a bit dirty. I cleaned the mazda portege since I have to drive to Seabrook this week..and possibly next. I'm not looking forward to it..to say the least. Instead of a 5 minute drive to and from work it will take me well over an hour one way. And I have to get up early..grrr...

Phase One is Complete
Putting some of more of my skills to use at home, I have started redoing the closet in my room. I'm quite happy with the results so far. The only problem is I don't have enough scrap wood left to do anymore. I need to go to work and make some more scrap. The current layout is very similar to the final layout except I plan to get rid of all of the wire shelving (not that most people have any idea what my closet looks like).
Apparently the phone line in my neighbors house went out today. We heard a rumor that the neighbor thought it might be due to the fact that we replaced our mailbox (which is indirectly his fault, btw). The last time our mailbox was hit our cable line was cut (upon digging a new hole for the post) and we got a bill. My temp mailbox post was put into the same hole..I'm not sure how I was supposed to hit a line. It was nice to know that his phone line was running in the other direction and had nothing to do with us.

Another One Bites The Dust
I have a routine for when I get home from work which was unfortunately thrown out of wack today. I am generally the first person to arrive home on the weekdays..and I am the only one who checks the mail. Today, however, we didn't receive mail because our neighbors are having work done on their house.
Why did our neighbors construction stop us from getting mail you ask? Well, apparently when the landscapers dropped off a pile of dirt, blocking the entire right side of the street by the way, they decided it would be fun to run over a mailbox. Our mailbox. They split the 4X4 post like it was a toothpick. I got home to find a splinter poking out of the ground and the mailbox lying next to it.
So it looks like we'll be getting a new mailbox..well, at least a new pole. The big issue now is that the post office doesn't deliver mail if there is something blocking your mailbox..or it's lying on the ground. I will refrain myself from cracking on the laziness of postal workers..since I used to be one..not that I was a full fledged postal worker..but I was lazy. You know, I just cracked on the laziness of postal workers. Oh well.
Back to the issue at hand. No mailbox means no bills or snail-mailed spam. Since we can't live without either of those, I immediately thought of my loft from college. That pile of wood in the garage. That *useless* pile of wood in the garage. Using one of the 4X4 legs from the loft, my new ratchet set, and my drill I was able to throw together a makeshift mailbox in a matter of minutes. So tomorrow we should be blessed with two days of junk mail..woo hoo!!

This is what I want
Ok, so this (this being the top pictured below) is what I want for my birthday..in Medium Gray:
I think I've found it online by searching for the part number of 82209344 on google. I can not verify that this (the number) is indeed it however because I get two different pictures. It is a pain looking for vehicle parts. If you don't think you can afford this, you should find some friends to help pay for it. :)

Vapid Appellation
I can't stand coming up with titles for entries sometimes. I always come up with a good one, later to realize that I've already used it. So if you have any good titles for me, let me know! If you actually know what the two words in the title mean (without looking them up), congratulations. You are way smarter than I. (and yes, I know I didn't quite use them correctly).
Well, it's February 1st, and you know what that means. Yep. It's Groundhog's Day Eve. So tomorrow morning we get to find out if there will be 6 more weeks of winter or not. If you just can't miss seeing it live and it's not broadcast in your area (or you can't be there in person), go to the live web cast. You can also check out the official website of Punxsutawney Phil. I'll give you some more links tomorrow..
I've recently drilled holes in my new Jeep. Click on the Jeep link to the left to see pictures. The holes were needed so I could add side steps for those of you whom are short and needed help getting in. I'm unfortunately not adding the lockable trunk to the Jeep anytime soon. Apparently the Add-A-Trunk hasn't yet be released. This means I may be looking for an alternative. It'd be nice to be able to secure my tools. It's a challenge to find much for the Unlimited however.
Jonathan's Birthday Extravaganza Weekend Bash was good fun. You can read the synopsis on his blog. I learned while I was there that I want to spend lots of money on my Jeep. Darn those catalogs with their pretty pictures.
Ok..must stop typing now.
Ciao
