Rain Delay

Today was another full day of things to do around the house. More yard work filled the morning and early afternoon. Mostly we cut out weeds and trimmed the trees. A power saw of some sort would have been great. Once the yard work was done I spent some time in the closet. I'm still not done, but I am much closer. Not having a compressor or nail guns yet, I've had to screw and hand nail everything. It started to rain before I had all the shelves cut so I packed up everything planning to call it a day. I don't want my brand new saw getting wet. About five minutes later the sun was back out. I then pulled everything back out and was able to cut and secure all of the shelves. Another hour or two and I should be ready to prep for paint.

What A Day

What a day it has been. OR to trim to yard work. Seven am to eight pm. A good day I assume. This was the first yard day of the year. I believe several people would have preferred it came earlier, but well..umm..yeah. Several bushes were severely hacked. Some to the point where they didn't have too many leaves left. Hopefully they will grow back. I think I've put some of them through worse. Like that time I somehow managed to catch one on fire. The burning bush. It burned very well and then became one of the stronger bushes. I imagine in a few weeks you won't even be able to tell I cut them. I also managed to cut the grass this evening, which really is just a method of raking the leaves. I had to empty the bag every two minutes or less.

No work tomorrow. I'm sure I could go to work and make some money, but I think I've had my fair share for the week. I need to spend some quality time in my closet so I can give the stuff living in the room's limited walk space a new home. It's too bad I want to paint the closet and add an electrical outlet. That will add at least another month to the project.. :) It would probably be a safe bet to say it will never get painted because too much stuff will migrate back into the closet.

I hope you enjoyed another late night michael's too tired to think straight and doesn't have anything to talk about blog.

Early

I should really write these posts earlier in the day. I think I have more to say then. At this time of night I'm only thinking about counting some sheep.

The new Quadratec (Jeep parts/accessories) magazine came today. Still no rack for my Jeep. They make one I like, but it won't fit on my Jeep. I've found one online that would work, but it requires drilling holes in the body (and it's about $750). No thanks..I've done enough drilling for the time being. One day I'll find a rack so I can take the kayak without the Protege.

Has anyone been watching the Revelations miniseries? It's quite bizarre. I have no clue what's going on other than a rogue nun is trying to stop the end of days. It doesn't seem like a topic that would air on a network television station.

I can't think of anything else to take up your time with for now..I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Maybe I'll put up pictures from DC..lol..

Ketchup

Apparently it's catch up week on ABC. Lost tonight is almost as bad as a repeat. I guess it's kind of interesting to see what they think is important. It would have been nice if they put something new in the episode however. In the first season of Alias (episode 17) they did a catch up episode as well. They did a much better job then however. Not only did it tell you what was going on in the show up to that point..it also had some new stuff for the people who already knew what was going on. This is a wasted episode.

I still haven't figured out what to do about the laptop. I'm trying to decide whether to go with an ultralight with a 12.1" widescreen (big negative is that the optical drive seems to be external on really light one) or the heavier with a 15.4" widescreen. All of Dell's deals should change tonight so maybe I'll figure it out tomorrow.

I just found out that Lisa has a blog..so in cased you missed it, catch it [here].

Blah...

Not much to say today (as always). Today was a trim day. Then I came home and tried to do a bit of organizing. That never goes too well. I had great plans of getting the pictures from the weekend off of the camera and trying to get them online as well. Here it is after 10 and the camera still sits on the desk waiting to be emptied.

I've been shopping around for a business laptop. It's been very hard to keep the price down while I try to make it a computer I wouldn't mind lugging around. Any suggestions are welcome.

It Has Arrived

Today was a good day despite the lack of sleep last evening. I finally made it home around 12:15am after hanging out in Columbia for a little bit upon our arrival from the DC area. I was back in the OR shortly after seven this morning. Luckily when I got home from the OR the UPS truck hadn't already stopped by. I caught up on some tv shows that I had recorded over the time I was gone while I awaited my saw.

After getting my saw I took some time to work on my closet. I'll have to check out Lowes tomorrow to see if they have my compressor back in stock yet. Having a brad nailer would make putting shelves on much easier. Hopefully I can get all the shelves in by the end of the weekend.

It's past my bedtime so I need to get some other stuff done and try to make up some sleep so I can be a trim carpenter tomorrow.

The Trip Home

We are nearly back to Columbia so I thought I'd write real quick. I doubt I'll have a chance to later this evening. We decided to take 85/77 instead of 95/20 on the return trip. Somehow we weren't paying close enough attention to the signs and drove right past the exit for 77 however. I found it odd that were driving past Billy Graham. Luckily parts of 485 are open so we were able to take that. Of course we then drove right past 77 again. How we passed it [twice] I'll never know. Enjoy the rest of your weekends!

DC

Today we went into DC and did lots of walking. Saw lots of stuff. I took a decent amount of pictures which I'll do my best to get online before I die. Afterwards we came back for a cookout which was good. There were several people, most of which I met for a day four years ago. We are watching Buffy now.

BEWB Update 010: Almost There

This will probably be the last update of the evening. We are about 17 minutes from our destination and 3 minute of schedule. So, assume we made it :).

BEWB Update 009: A Wee Bit Faster

Going straight through saved us 4 miles and 2 minutes. We are only 11 minutes behind and a little over an hour away from our destination.

BEWB Update 008: 295?

We decided to not take 295 around Petersburg/Richmond. We are hoping this will save us some time. How bad can the traffic be at seven o'clock on a Friday night? I guess we'll find out. 13 minutes behind schedule.

Posted by mhader at 7:12 PM

BEWB Update 007: Gas

We just stopped for gas. 1h35m after scheduled time.

Posted by mhader at 7:00 PM

BEWB Update 006: VA

We've made it to Virginia and are only 11 minutes behind. We skipped our scheduled gas stop however so we will be doing that soon. Traffic was bad due to some bridge reconstruction. That slowed us down a good bit.

Data access was horrible throughout NC. Virginia has a hot spot at their welcome center so Jonathan was able to get online with his PDA for about a minute.

BEWB Update 005: Have It Your Way

We just stopped at Burger King for a late lunch. This will probably put us a little behind.

We've made it to North Carolina and we are only about four minutes behind schedule.

BEWB Update 003: I-95

In the 77 miles to Florence, we were able to make up some time. We are only 12 minutes behind schedule now. Apparently my saw needs to be signed for as UPS's website says that the first delivery attempt was unsuccessful. I tried to update the evite, but due to a javascript dilemma with my blackberry I am unable to do so. So in case you were wondering Mary, I will be there.

We just got on I-20 headed towards Florence. We are approximately 24 minutes behind schedule.

I've made it to Columbia to meet Jonathan. We will be leaving for VA soon. Estimated time for trip is 7h27m.

PSI

This must be quick so I can go to bed and get up early enough to pack before going to work. It would have made sense to pack this evening, but my clothes are still in the dryer..

Kira decided that she didn't have enough air in her tires today so I helped her check and inflate them. I decided that I would check the tires on my protege while we were out there. It's a good thing. Out of a recommended 44psi, my tires were at 30, 28, 26, and 22 pounds per square inch. The tires are just so small it's hard to tell they are low. I guess if I ever got around to getting the oil changed they'd do it for me..but..

Good luck to Maryment on her abdication tomorrow. We'll have to party it up tomorrow evening. :)

My Computer Ate My Homework

This evening Kira put a floppy disk (who the heck still uses those?) into my mother's laptop knowing full well that it would get stuck and probably not come out easily. This was the case. In fact, a good chunk of the disk stayed inside the drive when it was being forced out. At this point the floppy drive is useless. After about fifteen minutes of vigorous shaking (which causes the computer to make some bizarre whirring sounds) and shoving objects into the drive, we finally get everything out. Problem now is that we can't get another disk back in. I ended up taking the whole drive apart to to figure out what was wrong. I find it entertaining when you either have less pieces than you started with..or leftover pieces when you are finished putting it back together.

On the job front I'll be full time at my Laser job on April 13. Interestingly that was a week ago. That's six full work days. Six days that I worked 44 hours at my other job. That will be a nice chunk of change..it'll make paying that saw off a little easier.

Speaking of the saw, I got a free blade from Amazon FedEx'd today. The saw is currently somewhere between Indianapolis and Greensboro. Hopefully it won't make it to Mt Pleasant until Monday (although it's scheduled for Friday) so no one here but me has to get it in the house. It's apparently 71 lbs in the box. I carry this same saw around all the time at work. I wouldn't think it weighed anywhere near 70 lbs (although I wouldn't say it's light). I'll have to give Amazon props for their shipping. I had the 70 lb saw shipped for free and it will likely be here the same week I ordered it. I saved a lot of money over buying it locally.

File Under Misc.

I just love it when I start an entry without a single thing to write about. Today was a fairly normal crappy day. The work of the day was in trim. We've been doing punch-work tie-in stuff for what seems like eons now. Basically, put shelves in that closet, put some base there, box in that pipe, install that cabinet, tie in that wainscoting, cut two blocks and tack them there...all in one work day. It's all the worst kind of work in small enough quantities to be very unproductive and highly annoying..especially when the house has all been primed. There's not much worse than being in a house when they are spraying.

Enough rambling about trim. My other job should be picking up soon. I have five cases scheduled for next week which is good. The only problem is that three of them are on Monday, which is a day following the end of a long, in a good way, weekend.

To respond to Jonathan's post yesterday, yes technically there are really small bits-o-prostate floating around in the air. I must say that they don't smell all that good. Maybe I'll trap some in my lungs for you on Friday. OR's do have a vacuum system that can be used if deemed neccesary. I don't think the gaseous prostate matter is nearly as bad as the random spot of 'warm water' you feel in bodies of water when others are present however.

Medical Fallacies

Yesterday's entry was almost forgotten. I'll have to admit that I was already in bed before I realized that the SunRider roof on the Jeep was still open. So after going down to fix that I remembered I had also forgotten to blog. In my haste, I didn't mention Happy B-day to Ms Garner. So, Happy belated B-day to Ms Garner. Not that she reads this.

If you caught Greys Anatomy last night, you caught a glimpse of what I get to see in the OR and what can happen if you aren't careful at my other job. Framing nails aside, I was quite shocked to see prostate work on the show..because I thought that the whole area of [the human body of] the procedure was a little too much for tv (especially only four episodes into the season.) The procedure they were performing is NOT the one I am involved with. It's just happens to be in the same anatomical place, with the same basic setup.

I'm not 100% clear what they were supposed to be doing, other than removing cancer. Which, by the way, they weren't doing as far as I can tell (IANAD). They looked to be preforming a TURP (the 'gold standard' for treating BPH). This procedure will most likely not leave you impotent. On the monitor behind Izzie looked to be an actual prostate being resected (very obviously not by the doctor who wasn't paying a bit of attention to the procedure). The difference between the TURP and the Greenlight is that they were actually taking out full chunks of tissue with a loop. With the laser, it's all vaporized..so no chunks. The doctors I've seen so far also don't hold the scope straight up an down. I'm thinking that would make the work a bit more challenging. I guess that's how you have to do it for tv..to make it more camera friendly.

Another Lazy Weekend

I didn't get much of what I had intended to do done this weekend. I spent way too much time beta testing. I tried Lowes in James Island this afternoon to no avail. I guess I'll just be waiting..which is fine. The saw has been ordered online for much cheaper than it would have been if I had bought it locally. I'd say I saved myself around $80 including tax. I'll just have to wait a week or so to get it. Not like I'm really in any kind of rush for that either. Speaking of lazy, I'm not up for writing much more. Hasta la manana!

Posted by mhader at 10:06 PM

Surprise Surprise

I went to Lowes today to make sure they didn't have a sale on power tools before I order my saw. To my astonishment they actually had the saw in stock (another good reason to order it--they never have it). My main goal at Lowes however was to buy the compressor/brad nailer combo kit. Since they never have in stock what I want to buy at the time (ie bolts for my Jeep side steps, hinges for the gate,..), it looks as if I'll be waiting to buy it. They were sold out. I could just order it, but I wanted to use money from a side job. Perhaps I'll try the Lowes on James Island on my way home from the Aquarium tomorrow. Not that I am really in a rush to buy it, but the money is burning a hole in my pocket :).

Where Did The Time Go?

I finally got around to beta testing today. I guess technically it's an alpha test according to EA. The game is Battlefield: Modern Combat. I've actually been quite impressed with this game. The levels are much larger than the last game I played like this. I know I've said it before, but I get annoyed playing games like this, because I am usually the worst player. I just don't play first person war games often enough to fully grasp all of the techniques.

I really need to break down and buy a headset. I think this is the third game I've tested where a headset would likely come in handy. I can see a war game being a lot better in an organized group, rather than 10 teammates doing their own thing. Anyways..off to bed I go..caio.

Wow..That's Big

Have you ever brought something home that you thought was relatively small only to realize that it's huge? I've done that several times. Like the time I brought home banners from TRU thinking they would look cool on the wall, only to find out that they were practically bigger than the wall. A couple weeks ago Kira brought home a banner from the movie theater. She said she wanted to hang it in her dorm room next year. The banner wouldn't lay out flat in our living room. It will be interesting to see if a) her roommate will let her hang it and b) how many walls it will take up.

Today I got my work van. It's a cargo van so it's the same size as a 15 passenger van, minus all the seats. I know these are big vans, but I've never had one at my house before. Sitting in the driveway, it's amazing how much bigger it seems. The fun part is that I get to start driving it around downtown in the near future.

The van is very basic. The radio is just that. It only has 4 buttons for pre-sets. Although it does have the FM 1 & 2 and AM. There is enough space in the van to hold all of my equipment 10-fold, so there is plenty of space. I could easily camp out in this thing if I had to. With a couple friends. It has a wheelchair lift, so that will be fun :). Oh..the little things. Now I just need to find a storage shed because my house can't accommodate 5 vehicles (I'm now responsible for three vehicles), especially when most of them are fairly large. If we all drove mini's it would be so bad.

Take Pride in a Road?

Who takes pride in a road..or a shopping center..or a bridge? (besides the people involved in making them) It really erks me when I read articles in the newspaper where politicians are constantly telling me that I should have pride in the new West Ashley traffic circle. Or..I should take pride in the new Cooper River Bridge. Granted some of these things might be cool, but I don't take pride in them. Maybe it's just in the way that I define pride. Which is most like the first one and a half definitions given by [Dictionary.com]. From the definition, I feel that pride is based on achievements. You take pride in something personal..something you actually accomplished. I've been very proud of most things that I have done/constructed in my trim job. I'll admit I haven't taken pride in everything :). I guess politicians like to use the 'pride in association' aspect. I guess because I live in Charleston I should take pride in the public transportation efforts. I suppose it reflects where I live. How does that reflect me though?

Ok, this was a poorly formed rant..sorry for that..

No More Pressure

Well, the pressure to write an entry every day is now gone. It's sad that I made it through a week of having no computer, yet still was able to come up with an entry. I was just so tired from the trip (and not letting myself take a nap) that I fell asleep sitting in my desk chair. I'm not really sure when I fell asleep, but I would put the time somewhere before seven (which is when I think I moved to the bed.) I slept like a rock until my alarm, which luckily was still set from the night before, woke me up a little after six.

In case you were wondering how my Monday/Tuesday went, they were fairly similar. I did the OR thing in the morning, followed by trim work into the afternoon. My case this morning was canceled so it made for a quick day in the OR and a longer day in the trim.

My trim bosses told me today that they were giving me a raise. Which is cool. It gives me a little more incentive to keep working for them in my spare time. I'll still make way more in my other job, even before you include benefits. But every little bit helps. That will be my tool fund.

Speaking of tools..I'm still waiting on my tax refund. We'll see how much I can afford to buy after that. Unfortunately, I'll be getting that right after the middle of the month, which is when all of my bills are due. Including that big orange Jeep in the driveway. Of course I'll likely be putting all the tools on the credit card, so I guess it's all irrelevant. I won't owe anything until the end of May (which is when the tax on the Jeep is due :) )

Where Does the Day Go?

Today flew by. I did my aquarium thing. Did the Kicken Chicken thing. Did the sit in front of a book all day thing. Did the...Huh..wait a sec? Michael sat in front of a book all day. This is why I don't pick up books and start reading them in the first place. I accomplished little more than some reading today. Which I suppose isn't all bad, but I had other things I could have accomplished. Oh well, another lazy Sunday.

I should really go to bed because I didn't want to get up this morning. I also didn't let myself take a nap..although I tried real hard. I'm sure I'll end up watching Grey's Anatomy however.

I think that my desk chair, which I've had for 9 years in August, may be approaching it's last leg in life. I noticed yesterday that it would tilt forward. It had not done that in the past, only backwards. I flipped it over to check it out this afternoon and found that one of four screws had fallen out. The two screws in front were fine. The single screw in the back wasn't doing so well. Due to the fourth screw coming out, the 1/8 inch piece of metal the screw was in snapped. I can now only use three screws. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the base of the chair breaks. Maybe I should learn how to weld..

I Made It

I am home once again and can much more easily update the blog. I had lots of fun and learned lots in California. I would have liked to see more, but I will have to save that for another day. I looked at my pictures on the camera and there isn't anything too exciting on it. I didn't get around to transferring the pictures to the computer yet. I didn't get to sleep much on the trip back so I took a bit of a nap this afternoon. I did my best to not sleep all day however. That's never a good idea for me. I lay down for a short nap around two and wake up at nine. Then I'm up all night. That's about the excitement for the day. Maybe I'll have more to say tomorrow. Till then...

Are We There Yet?

Well, I've been sitting in the lobby of the hotel I stayed in last night for nearly 4 hours now. That's not completely true. I went next door to Red Robin for dinner. I checked out of my room this morning so I didn't have to pay for another night in a hotel. I fly out at 11pm PST, headed for Atlanta. I'm glad I brought some reading materials with me.

Although I'm only about 9 chapters into Digital Fortress I'm enjoying it. I guess I like Dan Browns style of writing. His stories seem to be quick reads and compelling.

Tomorrow I'll be back to blogging on my PC, which will be nice. The Blackberry works (quite well, actually), but using a computer is still better. I may try to post one of the ten pictures I took this week while I was here. I think I took more pictures on the plane thab anything else. I wasn't able to get close enough to anything cool to take a picture worth taking. I should have brought my old camera. This trip will just get chalked up to a business trip where I was able to catch a glimpse of lots of cool things.

Silicon Valley

My blackberry all of the sudden regained access to the internet today, so I don't have to call in my entry.

The trip to Chico was entertaining. I got to see some of northern California which was cool. We ate at an In and out on the way. I'd never eaten there before although I have heard of them. I know they've been around for a long time, but I don't believe they are on the east coast.

After a bit of a dilemma I made my way back to San Francisco. I wasn't able to get any tourist time in on my visits to the city. Now I'm stuck in Santa Clara, part of the Silicon Valley. Boy am I glad I can get on the internet.

I made it

I can't get on line, so I have to phone in my blog for the day... Let's see, it took three planes, three trains, two buses, a taxi and 15 hours of traveling, but I can finally see the Golden Gate Bridge.

I rode over the Bay Bridge into San Francisco this morning and spent all day in the local hospital. I was hoping to be able to go into San Francisco tonight to enjoy the town, but it looks like I'll be heading about two and a half hours north to Chico, California!?!

Cool things I've seen...

Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge, eBay headquarters, Great Salt Lake....

Today's Dad's birthday, Happy Birthday!

I Hope I'm Ready

I'm sure I've forgotten something..but I'm ready to go. Now begins the waiting game to flights. I spent half of the morning figuring out how to get from the airport to the hotel. The hotel isn't in the same city I'll be in for the first couple nights. A cab ride would cost well over $100 from what I can figure. So I'm planning to use the public transportation that is severely lacking in this part of the country. Public transportation will put me within a mile of the hotel for probably less than $10. Not that the money is mine in the end, but I can't see paying that much for a taxi when I could ride trains [and buses]. I also don't want to carry around that much cash. Well, I am sure there is something else I need to do now, so I'll catch you on the flip side.

Packing

I'm currently "packing." Which simply means that I am avoiding actually doing anything whatsoever that resembles packing. I'm doing things like watching my taped copy Gray's Anatomy from last night, renaming my mp3's, going to Target and buying a million candle watt light for half price.

I'll be crossing my fingers, and so should you btw, that my Blackberry will work well in California so I can write blogs while there. Otherwise my record will be broken if I can't gain access to a computer. This is where a laptop would come in handy. I was going to try to prewrite some stuff before leaving and future posting it but that won't happen.

I bought a book for my flight. I got Dan Brown's Digital Fortress. I enjoy The Da Vinci Code so hopefully this will be good as well. Not being a reader, I don't know what the good books are these days. I've also got books 1 & 3 (can't find #2) of CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. They are making a movie..so I thought it would be good to reread them, since I don't remember a bit of it. Same goes for The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy which I can't find either. All I remember from that is that 42 is the answer to the universal question and the Earth was ruled by mice. If any of that spoils the book/movie for you, sorry.

The End of Another Weekend

Tomorrow is Monday. Monday is the only day this week I'll be a trim carpenter. The rest of the week, I'll be spending three hours behind most of my readers. Well, probably all of my readers. I'm sure I have lots to do to prepare myself for the rest of the week. One thing I need to do is gather up all my chargers/cords for all of my electric gizmos.

This is a day that should live on in history. Today I finished the gate. A project was actually completed. The start to finish time was only about a week to boot. Granted it's needed some attention for years. I even got around to finally filing my taxes today as well. What a ripoff that is. It'd be nice if you could e-file your taxes for free. If anything it should be more expensive to mail in your taxes.

My sister and I just got back from Sin City. I'd have to agree with Jonathan. I really liked the way it was filmed.

I Love Working On Saturday

This is another entry brought to you by the Blackberry. It's lunchtime so I figured I'd write for a bit.

It's amazing the amount of childish games that take place in the workplace. For some reason, glue seems to find it's way onto the bottom of the handle on the saw. When one tries to change the angle, they get a hand full of glue. The chances are that the slide is locked and the power disconnected as well.

In retaliation to the glue on the handle, bottles of glue have mysteriously sprouted wings and flown off of the deck and landed in puddles of mud. No tool or person is safe in this game, so one is constantly on edge keeping an eye on their surroundings.

I was able to rip some pickets for the gate I'm working on. I guess that means I'm going to have to finish that when I get home this evening. With all the rain we had last night the ground will likely still be saturated, so I may not get it installed, but it will be ready. I'm not going to try and hang a 35 lb door while standing in mud.

While on my lunch break I've also been shopping on amazon. I think I'm going to order a finish nailer and a saw in the next couple days. I thought about ordering it on my phone, but it's kind of a pain to navigate their site on this small of a screen.

Michael Eats Sushi, Film At Eleven

I didn't completely waste my day yesterday. I actually worked on the gate some. At least until I ran out of material. A slight miscalculation there. I guess if the calculations had actually taken place, we'd be better off. C'est la vie.

I went out to eat last evening and ate sushi. This has nothing to do with today's date. There is unfortunately no film however. I may have had little bits in the past, but I actually went to a restaurant for the purpose of eating sushi last night. I'd tell you what I had, but I really don't know. One selection had eel and the other crab. To be honest with you, it wasn't bad. I'm not saying that I'd go out and eat it every night or anything. I still like my cows, chickens, and pig better.

To set the record straight. I have absolutely no (meaning none whatsoever) desire to wear a fanny pack. That was supposed to be funny..haha.
