A Rhymer I Try to Portray
God bless the sanitation workers. I feel sorry for them when we put out as much stuff as we did today. Especially since yesterday was a holiday and they have to make up a day.
How come Amazon seems to know more about where my packages are than UPS and FedEx? Amazon appears to be more tapped into the system and provides more information than either company.
I've been watching 'Rides' on TLC about two cars being built for the CES and haven't been giving too much attention to the blog. So for that I am sorry.

RIM Says Nay
I found out today that RIM, the makers of the blackberry, only support bluetooth connections with headsets and a keyboard. This means I can't wirelessly connect/sync my blackberry to/with my computer. I'm not real happy about that. I can't find any information about a hack either. Part of the reason I added the bluetooth to the laptop was so I could sync without having to use the USB cable. Grr...Arggh...
In other news, I didn't really do a darn thing today. I woke up to LOTS of rain, tornado warnings, and the realization that I hadn't completely secured the top of my Jeep last night. I used the SunRider feature yesterday and simply pulled it over the top without latching it down and securing the drip retainers. Fearing a puddle of water and the smell of mildew in the near future, I ran outside into the pouring rain. Luckily no water found the inside of the Jeep. However, I was soaked by the time I got everything secured.
The only other thing that happened was the cleaning out of the hideaway space under the steps. That was no small feat, mind you. It's not that big of an area, but it took several hours and at least five trash bags. We also have several boxes of stuff ready for Goodwill. It's an area that has been cleaned up before but never with the 'Clean Sweep' mentality. Before I think we had the mentality that if we clean it up a wee bit and arrange it differently, we'll have more space. There was stuff that had been hidden away for nearly 15 years. Of course 15 years into the future, we'll probably be able to say that some of that stuff hasn't seen the light of day for 30 years..but it is a lot better.

Now For Saturday, Since it's Sunday
The graduation Friday night wasn't too bad. It was only about two hours which apparently beats last year by an hour. I'm glad it wasn't three. I probably knew less than 10 of the graduates so watching 400+ people walk across the stage was a bit boring. Saturday lots of people came over and enjoyed lots of food. They also left us with lots of food. It was a similar party to what we did when I graduated from Wando. Kira plans to attend Spartanburg Methodist in the fall. That would be in Spartanburg, SC which is probably three or so hours from Charleston and a little over an hour from Clemson.
My aunt and I spent some time buying her a Dell Saturday evening. My business Dell still sits mostly untouched. I'll probably start doing some stuff with it tomorrow. The only thing I've really done so far is try to set up a bluetooth connection between my phone and the laptop. I have been unsuccessful so far. The two see each other but I keep getting an error message that the laptop is "Unable to detect service". Whatever that means. Oh..I can't forget the first thing I did when I turned it on was use IE to download the latest Firefox release.

Hip Hip Hooray
Congratulations to the Wando High School Class of 2005. This includes my sister. Kinda scary. My sister is now a high school graduate and heading off to college in the fall. Congratulations also to Meghan, whom I don't think reads this much.
In other news I got my laptop today. So far it seems nice. One of the first things I did was pop in 'Top Gun' to test out the dvd/widescreen. The sound actually wasn't too bad for a laptop. Well, I'm typing this on the Blackberry so I've done enough. :)

Tomorrow We Visit the Moray
Tomorrow will be a day for visiting the Aquarium simply as a guest. We have some family in town and plan to go in the morning while most of you are at work :). It will be interesting to actually see people roaming the aquarium. There is usually very few people wandering around while I am there every week. Occasionally I'll see a few guests as I leave..but not too often.
I should have a VIP (very important package) arriving tomorrow as well. At least if there is someone here to sign for it. I really wish you could get a specific estimated time of delivery on packages so I knew when to be home. I'm sure we will get that one day.
mo·ray n.

Time To Hit Play
Yesterday while Kira and I were out, I bought her the 'Gilmore Girls' Season 3 and I bought myself the 'Shuan of the Dead'/'Dawn of the Dead' two pack and the latest Ryan Adams CD. I admit I'll likely never watch any of the 'Gilmore Girls.' I saw 'Shaun of the Dead' a little of a year ago just after it opened while I was in Scotland. It's a great movie I'd recommend checking out. It's an English zombie parody film. There is a good bit of English humor. It's actually labeled as "A smash hit romantic comedy. With Zombies." I bought the two pack with the 2004 version of 'Dawn of the Dead' because they were both $20 separately, or $20 packaged together. I figured what the heck. I'm not big on horror movies, but for some reason I tend to enjoy the zombie flicks.
I bought the Ryan Adams CD so I'll know more than one CD worth of songs when I go see him in a couple weeks. I made my Jeep CD copy so I'll have to listen to it while I'm driving around. Only an hour till the season finallies (I don't think that's a real word) begin. I've got to remember to actually have the tv on by 8..unlike the last three weeks of 'Lost'. Oh..and I bought a nail gun and hose this evening on amazon with the $25 off $199+ purchases in the tools section in case anyone cares. Now I just need a table saw, staple gun, orbital sander, router, and nails..and I'm probably missing something.

Bombs Away!
Today I spent my obligatory two hours at work and then hung out with my sister for a while. We drove up to the north area which is the home of the big box retail stores that sell tv's. I wasn't too impressed with the selection. I really wanted to see an LG in action because I never paid much attention to them in the past. I've actually not given much attention to any LCD in the past because I was dead set on a CRT. At BB and CC I found the 23" version of the 26" tv I want. Due too poor reception, neither of the pictures looked good. They were at the end of the line where the picture on all of the tv's start getting fuzzy because they've split off the signal so many times. The only 26" screen that I found that looked good was a SHARP. I know the company as been around for a while, but I don't know much more than that. It was a bit pricey so we'll see.
To answer Ben's question..my machine runs off 220V (well 200, 208, 220, 230, or 240) at 50amps (I really need to figure out how to test amps on my multimeter) which means the plugs are even fewer and far between. Now for the water. Hmm. Well, it's been different in every hospital so far. This machine uses a lot of water. Which I find horribly wasteful and I wish there was another way around it. I didn't really see just how wasteful it was until this week when I had to drain it into a sink. I have been tying it directly into a drain line. I carry with me two hoses, one for inflow and the other outflow. My inflow of water comes mostly from a garden style faucet. Today however I had to tap into the end of the sink faucet in the sub-sterile room. That meant another trip to Lowes, which was luckily right next door to the hospital. Lowes has probably been liking me these last couple weeks. I've made probably a dozen trips for my plumbing and electrical needs (not to mention the home projects). I'm honestly not sure when the last day was that I did not stop into Lowes at least once to pick something up.
Oh, and in case you haven't heard..or missed in on /. there is a new show called 'Systm' that is only available online..and only through torrents (the legal variety). The site to get the torrent is [A HREF="http://www.systm.org/">www.systm.org]. The first episode was just over ten minutes. I thought it was very well done. The people doing it are professionals so they know what they are doing. I wouldn't be surprised to see visits from Leo & Patrick, whom I believe to be the original hosts of the "Screen Savers" from ZDTV/TechTV/G4..or whatever it's called these days (I don't get it whatever it is).
Gotta be up before too long..must get sleep.

Everyday is a Holiday
Well, not really. It seems like it lately however. I guess the holiday is really a week away. Work this week will be rather important and very infrequent. I'm trying to get three new hospitals set up for surgery. I've already scheduled cases in one that I have not yet been too. I have a week to make sure the laser is good to go in that hospital. Power and water connections are my big concern if you were wondering. There are some rough standards set for power, but not all hospitals use them. The water and power connection also tend to be on opposite ends of the room which creates many problems. Oh well..off to bed I go..

Too Easy To Go Astray
I wish I could keep on task with the things I do. It would be much easier to actually get things done. The tv is such a bad influence. Speaking of tv's, I did a small amount of product research this afternoon. I have a feeling I'll end up with an LCD screen. I'd prefer the slim CRT, but I don't want to wait for another year. I need to go to an electronics store to actually look at it, but I was thinking of an LG 26" widescreen. I haven't been able to find too many user reviews or unbiased information on it though. It's got to be way better than what I have now..and it could actually be used as a monitor for my computer in case my current monitor dies.

Cable Causes The Nerves to Fray
I really hate that our cable is as bad as it is. I really think we should be able to get all the major networks, the weather channel, and ESPN. I think that part of the problem is that the cable comes from the road into a bare two way splitter on the side of the house. One side goes to a room downstairs. The other side runs across the front of the house (about 110') and into a three way splitter. One goes to mom's room, one to the living room, and one to the four way splitter in my room.
Today I ran a new[er] coax cable across the front of the house to cut out one of the splitters along the path to my 'tv' and the cable modem. I also put boxes on each side of the house to help protect the new splitters from the weather. I just replaced them last year and they were already consumed by rust. There is however no notable difference in tv reception. I have a feeling there is nothing we can do about it. I think it has something to do with the line that runs to the house from the road..or possibly from the front of the neighborhood to the box by the road in front of our house. Satellite would be nice..but we'd have to switch to DSL.

Have Lion, Will Slay
Apparently the midget population of Cambodia just got a lot smaller. No pun intended. In a bit of a gruesome, yet entertaining story, the CMFL (Cambodian Midget Fighting League) thought they could take on an African Lion. Of the 42, only 14 are still alive to talk about it. Too bad there's no pictures..I wonder why.. :)[BBC Link]
I hope everyone enjoyed their Star Wars midnight and a minute show last evening. I'm happy to say I was sleeping for that.
I don't have much else to talk about. It's been a long week thus far and there is still tomorrow to go.

Goodbye My Cathode Ray
It looks as if I may be buying a new tv before I originally expected. It was something I was both hoping for and dreading. Shortly after I finished my blog entry yesterday I turned the tv on to see what was on. About 15 minutes later it made a funny noise and completely died. It's been having some issues lately so I'm not too surprised to see it go. I guess it served me well for that last 10 or so years through the end of high school, all of college, and a bit beyond.
I intend for my next tv to be widescreen and hd. The big problem is that the slim tubes aren't out yet and the widescreen CRTs are too deep for my current entertainment center. I don't want to buy a flat panel because they are pricey and I'm not impressed with the quality/longevity. I'm not yet prepared to build the new 'entertainment center.' I still need a few tools, more material, and space in the room to make it deeper than the current. So I had to reattach the cable to the computer and reinstall the tv software while I debate my options.

How Much Am I Going To Have To Pay?
Well, the PS3 was revealed today. I haven't finished sifting through all the articles about it yet so I can't make a very well formed decision on it. It will probably take seeing in action before I truly decide. I'll have to get my hdtv before I get my PS3 though. I may have to get two tv's to support the 32x9 dual hd outputs. Wouldn't that be sweet.
I'm not sure how I feel about the controllers. They look like a boomerang. I'm perfectly happy with the original style, but I'll hold my final judgment until I use one. The use of bluetooth for the controllers is my biggest concern right now. I like the idea, but bluetooth means batteries, which we know are sub-par for this day and age..when are the nuclear batteries that last 50 years coming out? The controllers are supposed to last 24 hours before needing to be charged. I assume they will charge via one of the 6 usb ports on the comput..console which would mean you could probably leave it plugged in and operate that way if need be. Wireless controllers will be nice as long as they don't get stuck down in the abyss of the couch or somewhere like the middle shelf in the snack cupboard.
I'm almost mad that they changed the power plug. The original PSX and PS2's used the same cord. (They went and changed it in their rereleases.) I have several products that use the same plug so it was nice to have something universal. Universal..a concept Sony doesn't truly understand (why use the MS Duo, which is a proprietary format of a proprietary format). The reason I said "almost" is that they appear to be using a standard computer plug..seeming how that's pretty much what the PS3 is I guess it makes sense. The nice thing is that I have more of those cords than outlets in my house so I won't have to worry about not being able to find one.
Time to start saving up..
Now I need some answers.. :)
I need to get a laptop soon. I'm trying to decide between a widescreen laptop or a tablet PC. In the world of laptops, is dell really worth spending more on? I can get a computer whose specs are much better and save [my company] several hundred dollars if I went with a gateway/toshiba/hp/... Any suggestions?

From The Sun, Not A Single Ray
Today was a rather gloomy day. When I awoke the ground was wet but it seemed to be clearing up. I hadn't looked at the weather in days. I considered taking the Jeep to the trim job since I was working on the island and it would be nice to be able to open it up. I ended up deciding not to take it because I was running a bit late and had a weird vibe from the weather. Not too mention I'd have to move all my tools over.
I've got to run by some new [to me] hospitals with the laser tomorrow to make sure we are set (ie. have all the plugs and water connectors) to get the machine vaporizing in the new facilities. I realized this afternoon (like 4:30ish) however that I didn't actually have the laser. I've been leaving it at the hospital where all the cases have been thus far. That prompted for a shower and a trip to the OR. I grabbed my laser and started heading for home when I realized about halfway that I had left the water hoses connected in the OR. So I had to turn around and go back to the hospital to pick those up. I'm fairly certain that I have everything that I need now..except some sleep..so goodnight!

Someone Needs to Keep the MPAA at Bay
Why does the Motion Pictures Association of America have to go after tv shows too? I can understand movies. I can understand music (by the RIAA.) I can even understand shows on pay channels. I just don't get why television shows that are broadcast over the airwaves for free are a a big deal. I really don't see much of a difference between downloading tv shows and recording them on some sort of PVR.
Getting off the soap box, this weekend wasn't too bad. I probably watched way too many movies, but I enjoyed it so it's all good. While walking to the aquarium this morning I saw five river otters in the Cooper River. I know they tend to hang out in the area, but I've never actually seen them there. I believe that's only the second group of otters I've ever seen. I didn't realize they hung out in such big groups.

My CPR Foray
For another 364 days I am certified in CPR and first aid. Then I get to take the class again. The class was quite interesting. I learned lots of good stuff. Lot's of chest compressions were performed on a man with no arms, legs, or inside's. It's nice to know a little bit more about how to help others should something happen. I hope that I don't have to use my new skills however.

Oh No!, It's Friday..
and it's the 13th. The only one for the year (unlike last which had two.) For those of you with paraskevidekatriaphobia (also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia) it's already half over. Just stay in your house and away from dangerous objects for the rest of the day. You should be just fine. Although, according to [Dr. Donald E. Dossey] if you can learn to correctly pronounce the word paraskevidekatriaphobia (a term which he coined), you should be cured.
I wish I had realized that it was Friday the 13th before I did. I might not have gone to get a big needle stuck in my arm. Of course, I don't really fear the day, so I guess it's ok. I actually fear the 14th [of every month] more..that's when the Jeep payment is due. I'm going to call that autoapodekatoophobia. The fear of making automobile payments. Or maybe it should be apechohodosautoapodekatoophobia. The fear of making off road automobile payments. I digress.
The day is not all bad because it's Maryment's last day at her crap job..congrats on that, btw. Also, I've taken the day off..mostly due to the vaccine that I can feel coursing through my body..but..I'm not working so it's all good.

Band Partay
Tonight was the Wando band banquet. The seniors, which includes my sister, were honored. Instead of getting up in front and talking and carrying on, the seniors made a video presentation (where some of them carried on). I don't know most of the band members..including the seniors, but the video was still quite entertaining. One group did their own rendition of “Dragostea Din Tei,” which was made popular by Gary Brolsma not too long ago.
I'm fairly certain that I don't have TB..although I guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow. I also get to have a couple shots as well. I'm so exciting I'm bursting with fruit flavors. Saturday I'll be getting CPR certified, so if you ever can't breath and your heart stops, you should come find me. I'll hopefully have an idea of what to do.

TB Assay
Well today I had to take tests and get pricked to see if I have tuberculosis. That's most of the excitement wrapped into one sentence. The tests were for a hospital I should be working in soon. I have to do all kinds of stuff to be able to work there. I was given two large notebooks this morning and a pad of paper with probably 300 questions I had to answer. I don't think I retained much of anything, I just answered questions for several hours. Apparently I'll get to do this annually. Once I was through the first notebook, I found the answer key. That's one heck of a place to store that. Being the honest person I am and figuring that I may actually learn something by continuing without free answers, I didn't look at them. Now I just need my CPR certification and I can go push some buttons on a machine in the OR of a new hospital.

The Day Was By No Means Gray
I'm thinking the cold weather is finally behind us. It ought to be..it is May. I'll soon be missing the cool weather I'm sure. My room is about to go from comfortable to so incredibly hot you want to go for a swim in molten lava to cool off. Driving around with the top open on the Jeep will be great fun in the following months. I really wish you could drive on the beach here without going to jail afterwards.
On a whim I bought a couple [Ryan Adams] concert presale tickets for next month. He's often considered alt-country (I'm a fan of the alt..not so much the country) with a punk rock influence. He's a really good singer/songwriter so I figured I shouldn't pass up the chance to see him in a rather small venue (the North Chuck Performing Arts Center).

No Way!
Michael has updated his gallery. I've put some pictures from the day in DC online. Perhaps I should have taken pictures the rest of the weekend..but alas I did not. If you haven't seen the WWII memorial, I have several pictures from that. It opened April 29, 2004 so it's only been there a little over a year [official site]. I also have pictures of the Capitol building, White House, [Canadian Embassy], Korean & Lincoln memorials, and much much more! Feel free to offer up some comments on individual picture pages in the gallery. I probably won't add much more than what I have already.
Not much else different is going on here. Mostly just the same old. I'm still working both jobs. Lasing when needed and trimming when I have nothing else better to do. My room is mostly all put back together after having gut the closet last week. There is actually walking space again. Now I just need to get a smaller bed and I'll be set..

Not Much to Say Today
Mostly because I am tired (as always I know). I worked trim today so it was the most physically demanding day I've really had all week. Lot's of running up an down the stairs to make some minor adjustments to cuts.
The family went out to eat tonight at the Kicken Chicken. It was as good as it always is..which is to say it wasn't great..but it wasn't bad. I wonder if I'll end up in the one downtown this weekend. I haven't been to that one in a while.
To work tomorrow or not is the question. One which I'll answer around 6am tomorrow. I'm supposed to be helping a friend with something in the afternoon, so I likely wouldn't be there all day..but it's easy, easy work (hardware) so I'd hate to turn down time and a half.

Stripping is art in Norway
I enjoy perusing the odd news every once in a while. There's always an interesting story or ten. Apparently the courts around the world have been wasting some quality time lately (or as usual I guess I should say). Apparently cheerleaders can no longer shake there derriere in Texas [story] and stripping in Norway is now a form of art, like the opera [story]. This [story] is for the mature people out there. I think that article speaks for itself.
I found this quote about border control on [Wonkette] entertaining as well: "..illegal mariachi crossing is serious business. Even if it turns out they're not terrorists, they're taking jobs from American mariachi bands, and that's not right." Amen

Hurray!
The closet is done and lots of stuff has been put back into it. It's actually quite empty because lots of things that came out are not going back in.
I know you all are tired of the closet talk, but I don't have much else going on these days. I've spent a total of about six hours total at work the last two days. The rest of the time was spent remodeling and traveling to Lowes. I've been there 4 times this week already.
I'm having a hard time writing this entry because I've started watching a show on the Discovery channel about a dam being built in Iceland. I'm hooked ([This seems to happen to me a lot]) and think I'll continue to watch it while I clear off my bed. Perhaps I'll have something exciting to say tomorrow. Just don't get your hopes up :)...

I Wish I Could Just Spray
'Pimp My Closet 2005' is nearing it's end. Have I mentioned that I don't like painting? This step was completed today thanks to a gallon of paint, a roller (not the Ben/Sheena kind unfortunately), and a brush. Oh how nice it would have been to simply spray it. It's amazing the number of holes I missed when spackling. They just blended in with all of the other marks on the wall. Once the closet has a chance to dry, I can start filling it up with the litter from the bedroom/hall floor. A walkway to and in the room is in sight!
There really isn't much to say about anything else. Painting took most of my day after my OR time this morning. I decided I'm not doing trim this week until Friday..if at all. I know that if I go early in the week I'll be sanding. I'm hoping by Friday that the sanding will be done..although somehow I doubt it. Things like that seem to wait for me.

Irritating Is All I Can Say
Today went well up to the point I decided to put a power outlet in my closet. The experience was the perfect example of Murphy's Law. It was so bad I really don't want to talk about it. I will say that it did involve one too many holes in the wall, a big hole in the thumb, a trip to Lowes, and way too much time of my life taken away from me. You should all be happy to know that I did utilize the breaker box this time.
I have to get up early, so hasta..

It's May!
Today turned out to be a pretty good day if you don't account for the fact that I spent it mostly inside working. The weather turned out a lot better than I had thought. It would have be a nice day for a paddle. I really need to get back out in the kayak sometime. I've just had other things that take precedence.
I went to the aquarium this morning for my normal volunteer work. Not too much out of the ordinary today. There were 7 baby sharks born on Tuesday though so I was able to check them out. It's amazing how big they are considering the size of the mother. She must not be very old herself. I saw them shortly after they were fed so there were some leftovers floating around in the tank. Seeing their natural predatorial instincts with the food was fascinating.
Upon leaving the Aquarium I set out to take the long way home and hit as many of the local Lowes stores as possible. Today was the last day to use a coupon we received recently. Much to my delight, I hit the mother-load at the first store. I was finally able to get my compressor/brad nailer kit. No more hand driving nails for me..unless I need to do some framing. I think a framing gun probably holds more air than my compressor. I guess if I get to that point, I'll have to pull out my mad electrical skills and get one of the compressors in the garage to work.
With the new compressor in tow I was able to quickly finish up the shelves. Then came the part I loathe. Prepping for paint. This step is likely worse than the actually painting. A lot of spackling and a tube and a half of caulk later and I'm just about ready for paint. All I need to do is sand the walls down again before I paint. I can't wait until it's done. I may actually be able to walk in my room again in the near future. Not that it'll last for long.
Ok, Grey's Anatomy just came on. Gotta go. Peace out.
